Today marks me being at UWC Waterford for 2 weeks. Wow. Going from the U.S. Senate Page Program to an international school in eSwatini is quite a jump on its own but add the jolt of arriving 2 weeks after everyone else, and you’ve got one crazy transition. Let’s just say those first days were disorienting, overwhelming, and hard. However, they were also exciting, and full of newness.
I think stories are the best way to explain my experience so far. Last week, I was playing UNO with a guy from Bangladesh, a girl from Finland, a girl from Germany, and a guy from India. Three days ago, I was discussing the US’s stance on Taiwan and Palestine with a girl from China and a girl from Palestine. Two days ago, I was lying in bed, talking about whether reverse-racism existed with my Ugandan roommate. Yesterday, I spent two hours writing a paper on a British acting group for theater class. I also hiked up the mountain at the back of campus and quickly came down because it started to rain and lightning storms here are the worst in the world. (And my height makes me unfortunately conspicuous to lightning).
Tomorrow, I am not going to be taught by a single American. On Tuesday, I am going to run some track race that I am totally not in shape enough to run as part of an “inter-house” school competition (Harry Potter-esque). On Thursday, I will get to play sports with little kids from a school for disabled children as part of my community service project. And on Sunday, it will have been three weeks since embarking on this adventure. I am so grateful for what I have experienced so far and am looking forward to what’s to come.
